Bacteria Growth
Bacteria grows when there is an increase in "cell mass and the number of ribosomes, duplication of the bacterial chromosome, synthesis of new cell wall and plasma membrane, partitioning of the two chromosomes, septum formation, and cell division. This asexual process of reproduction is called binary fission" ( Kenneth Todar PhD). In simpler terms, bacteria grows when the cell gets bigger and splits into two parts. Bacteria growth can be measured by its cell mass and the changes in cell numbers.
4 main phases of bacteria growth
- Lag Phase- it is right after the cell is produced and it may grow in volume or mass, synthesizing enzymes, proteins, and RNA and increasing in metabolic activity.
- Exponential Phase- the stage where the cells divide by binary fusion at a constant rate.
- Stationary Phase- bacteria produces secondary metabolites.
- Death Phase- the number of cells able to work decreases.
